"Hello, I have a question for you. My ggaunt married William E. Troy. Her name was Harriet Garrison. She came from Sumner County, Tennessee. She married William E. Troy in 1862. When she moved here. She came along with two sisters and two brothers. The names are Smith, Tyree, Elizabeth, and Martha Garrison. Tyree was my gggrandfather a brother to Harriet Garrison Troy. I have never been able to find out whatever became of Harriet or where she is buried. Nor, do I know anything about her brothers or sisters. All I know is her sister Elizabeth lived with William E. Troy and his first wife for a short time as noted on a census record. My ggrandfather son of Tyree who lived until 1970 said one of the sisters not Harriet I believe disappeared with her child early one morning when she went to the family's well to get water. Either Elizabeth or Martha I think. If you know anything please email me. I have worked hard and haven't found nothing. Maybe you know something that could help me on this research."

Notes for DR. JOHN WESLEY LONG II:

He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1847 and from Jefferson Medical College in 1848.  According to notes made by his son, he first settled to practice medicine in Davidson County near Trotter's Creek Meeting House, at a little settlement called Possum Town, in 1847.  Possum Town is now called Bethany and is situated in Midway Township between Lexington and Winston-Salem.  The young doctor stayed around about a week, but had he no patients at that point.  Then a man came over and told him that his wife was sick, had had a chill, and he must come quick.  The doctor went and gave her quinine, and she promptly got well.  A few days later, the man asked the doctor what he charged. "Oh," he said, "he guessed a dollar would do."  Whereupon the man said she got well so quick he'd give him a dollar and a half.  Dr. Long was a country medicine practitioner, with arduous work and small remuneration.

He was everybody's favorite uncle.  When a calamity would strike, such as losing the best carriage horse, it was John who would come up with the money to buy another.

He married Nancy Margaret Troy.  Unfortunately, he died when his son, John Wesley Long III, was only four years old.  He lived long enough, however, to instill into the life of his young son a love for medicine, and it was not long before young John Wesley made the decision to follow in his father's footsteps.

Burial: Hackberry Cemetery, Tillman County, Oklahoma

Notes for JEFFERSON DAVIS BURKE:

The family has used both spellings: Burk and Burke as surnames.   According to the book by Greever, Hockett, Verbal, and Stevenson "Some

Descendants of John Burk (1656-1699) Middlesex County, VA" (Iberian

Publishing Company. 1999), "Jefferson Davis Burk, born Aug. 2, 1861 (church

record); died in 1938 in Tillman Co., OK; married Mar. 31, 1884, Emma Alice

Balfour, died in 1941 in OK at age 77.... A write-up of J.D. Burke by grandson Edward C. Burke provides the following information (book unidentified): J.D. Burke settled in Oklahoma on Dec. 12, 1901 when he was 46 and his wife, Emma, was 36, and that he had gone to IL at age 21 (c1882).  They had 9 children, 3 of whom died in infancy. In the journey to OK, they left in 1900, crossed the Mississippi River at Quincy, IL, traveled to Kansas City, MO, then south across Kansas to Cherokee, OK where Emma's first cousins lived. There they rented a house until their final move to the new land which J.D. had drawn his claim in July 1901 at a price of $2.50/acre for 160 acres.... Jefferson D. moved his family into a sod home until a wooden house was built.

A granddaughter remembers that "J.D." had an extensive library, that a

picture of Abraham Lincoln hung in his house, and that he was a pioneer in

farm technology. A recollection during the 1930's depression was that this

family, in those hard times, was pleased that it had the money to pay

taxes."

Notes for ANDREW NIXON WALKER:

In Andrew and Milinda's early married life they moved to Harper County, Kansas.  Later they brought their family to Oklahoma, Indian Territory, where they bought a farm from a man that had acquired it in the Land Rush at the opening to the Cherokee Strip.  This was near Yewed, Oklahoma, where they made their home the rest of their lives.

Notes for MALINDA RACHEL LOVELESS:

Andrew and Malinda had twelve children.  Reading the births and deaths of this family is heart breaking.  During a two week period of time in 1897, Andrew and Malinda lost three children to diptheria; Weaver, 12, Elsie, 4, and Ellen, the two year old baby.  Malinda gave birth to Rose four days after Ellen died.  I (Westlake) have a feeling that Rose was born prematurely and was never a healthy child, since she died at the age of 24. Lizzie, age 9, died the following year in 1898.

Children of ANDREW WALKER and MALINDA LOVELESS are:

or, was Perina born in 1853?

The 1870 Illinois Census lists Perina Price (age 16) as living in Augusta Township in the household of Samuel W Mickle (age 42), his wife, Eloise (age 32), and their son, James (age 13).  (Pronounced as in "pickle" and the handwriting is not clear for the spelling of the wife's name.  "Elvesse?" "Elresse?" "El??s??" ?)

In 1884, Perina, her husband Andrew and their two children, Bertha and Clarence, moved from Illinois to Kansas in a covered wagon as part of a wagon train.  Her twins, Georgia and Gertrude, were born in a "dugout" sod house in Kansas, with 8 inches of water on the floor at the time.

On January 20, 1901 she (age 48) married Emery Moore Eastman (age 65, born January 28, 1836 in Delaware, Ohio or Pike Co., PA?, and died January 17, 1908 in Wellsford, Kansas, two previous marriages) at Wellsford, Kiowa County, Kansas.    "printed Jan. 3, 1907 Capt. Emory M. Eastman, an old and honored soldier of Wellsford was buried in Haviland cemetery Monday. "

Perina is buried in Greensburg, Kansas next to Andrew and her tombstone reads "Mother Balfour".

Posted on the Kiowa County Message board by Ruth Beechem, September 26, 2001: "Searching for information on the life & burial of Emery Moore Eastman. This is what was printed in the newspaper of Delaware, OH where he was originally from:

"Word has been received in the city of the death of Emery M Eastman, a native of this county, and who lived at his father's place near Stratford. Mr. Eastman died on the 28th of December at his home at Wellsford, KS, (Kiowa Co.) as the result of an attack of Bright's disease. He was 70 yr of age, and had gone to Kansas in 1884. Mr. Eastman was a Captain in the 96th O. V. I." Source: January 17, 1908 from Index to Deaths, Funerals and Obituaries, Delaware Gazette, 1907-1908
